WHAT IS AN ACADEMIC TEXT?

I think an academic text is a kind of text that can give you a teaching for a special purpose, and give you tools to learn and face a field you are studying; so it is addressed to a specific audience who can find it well-structured, with a lot of useful information that you can not simply let go or pass as if it were a simple text just to have fun.

TEN VIRGINS

Her hand holding the black blade reached out for his throat, and ripped it open. Both of them fell heavily on the ground. The woman tried hard to keep his hands still while he was drowning with his own blood. Her eyes were captivated by the purple stain eagerly growing all over his white and blue uniform. She didn’t notice her hands were wet and purple too. The moon was hiding behind brownish clouds and dying trees. There were nothing but trees surrounding the scene and, the mesmerizing singing of insects mixed up with the rumor of the wind through the feeble leaves and boughs made an arousing symphony that wrapped everything up. she sat still for a while. The blood still ran when she decided to search the body. Her eyes stuck on the new features of his face: fat vains, the blueish color of the skin, the red and wet eyes, the expression of intense desperation. She looked for the gadget that forced her to stay no farther than five meters from the guard. If she dared to cross that imaginary line an electric stream would instantly break her back in two. Her clever hands found it after a while and quickly mashed it, mashed it to dust with the help of two rocks. The former prisoner finally got up and dragged the body amongst some bushes. Her silhouette moved over to a silent river nearby and dived. She realized she was free.

TOWARD THE INTEGRATION OF ART

IN THE LEARNING PROCESS OF

A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Topic: the encouragement of oral expression in the learning process of a foreign language through art.

Audience: teachers and foreign languages students in the learning process to become teachers.

Justification: because writing and reading have become the focus of the learning process of a foreign language, so students tend not to care about orality as an important means of expression for human beings interaction.

Objectives:

General: To implement a pedagogical proposal to the encouragement of oral expression in the learning process of a second language through art.

Specific:

To evaluate what the influence of art in the learning process of a foreign language is.

To promote artistic activities that help students to improve their oral expression in a second language.

To encourage spontaneous oral expression that motivates students to act according to any situation.

To evaluate what the role of authentic material in the improvement of oral expression is

To propose a dynamic for evaluating oral expression in a foreign language.

Research questions:

What is the influence of art in the learning process of a foreign language?

How to promote oral expression through art?

How to recreate situational contexts that help students to develop spontaneous oral expression?

What is the role of authentic material in the encouragement of oral expression?

How to evaluate oral expression?

Nowadays it seems that the learning process of a foreign language has been reduced to the idea of writing and reading –producing and comprehending different types of texts, paying less attention to the role of orality in the process of interaction of the human beings. I would lie if I told you that I do not think about literacy as an important component for developing the ability of expressing and understanding. Indeed, some times I like reading and writing, but I can not deny that learning a language is more than that, it is also about the art of expression through orality.

I consider it is necessary to have some considerations about writing and orality. On one hand, it is important to consider writing as an ability that we acquire through the practice of expressing ideas into words that we write on a paper. On the other hand, orality is a capacity that we develop through the interaction with other people. Orality tends to be a complex process which includes lots of components (gestures, deictic expressions, intonation –prosody, the position and the movement of the body, etc.) that complement the communicative situation which participants are part of. My point is that we can not pass up what happens with people and their social relationships in the ordinary life. When I go to a market for example, I do not write a list specifying to the vendedor, what I am looking for or what I want to know about the product I want to buy; when I meet my classmates or friends, we do not communicate with each other through writing on pieces of paper. What I mean is that oral expression gives us the possibility of expressing our feelings and our human nature throughout one of the most common means of communication: conversation¹, which does not happen when we write.

Now for example, I am writing this presentation for my final paper, and maybe you already inferred what my purpose is, but it will be difficult for me to make you know about the feelings and emotions that I express each time I pronounce a single word or a whole phrase; so it will be more difficult for you to guess what I really want to express. That is the singularity of orality. It is true that writing does not depend on an immediate context as orality does, and this gives us the chance of manipulating the discourse in a different way although with the same purpose, communicating. While we are writing it is very common to use punctuation marks attempting to evoke sensations and feelings that just can make sense in the immediate context. For that reason I consider orality as an art of the expression.

Then, what is expression?

That is a difficult question to answer, yet let’s see a pertinent definition from the “Collins Cobuild, English Language Dictionary” for my proposal.

Express: ¹ if you express an idea or feeling; ² when you express yourself; ²ּ¹ you put ideas into words, especially openly or clearly, by speaking or writing them; ²ּ² you show your thoughts or feelings by your actions or by artistic activities”. This definition definitely summarizes what I have been trying to express since I started to write this presentation. Although I am considering oral expression as an optimum means of communication, it does not mean writing is not. I do not attempt to promote a conflict between these communicative processes; I am just looking for emphasizing on what I am considering for the development of my research project.

So, what to do for developing or encouraging oral expression in the whole sense, for interacting with other people in a foreign language? This question has been around my mind for a long time, but finding an answer has been difficult for me until now. That is why I propose the integration of art towards the reinforcement of oral expression in the learning process of a second language.

As I told you before, most of the students of a foreign language tend to pay more attention to writing and reading during their learning process, acquiring a great ability for putting and organizing thoughts into written words; but when they are exposed to any kind of oral situations they feel shy, they feel it is so difficult to express themselves talking, that is why it is very common to hear some students saying “I prefer writing”. In our context we do not have the chance of being in contact with the second language, thus we depend a lot on what we do in the classroom, so teachers and students have the responsibility of creating occasions that help students to encourage the capacity of oral expression in a second language.

Searching information for building the framework of my proposal about the encouragement of oral expression in the learning process of a second language through art, finding relevant information to construct good arguments to support my idea has been difficult. Nevertheless, I believe art develops human being sensibility and a creative capacity that give him confidence for interacting with other people through orality.

"ORALITY AND LITERACY: THE TECHNOLOGIZING OF THE WORLD"

According to the second point, "writing destroys the ability to memorize and weakens thought, those who use it, tend to forget as they rely on an exterior mechanism in order to remember", Walter J. Ong. (1982) wrote in his text, paragraph 4, "writing... more than any other artifitial creations, is utterly invaluable and indeed essential for the realization of fuller, interior, human potentials", from which the ability to memorize is one of them because, "Technologies are not mere exterior aids but also interior transformations of consciousness...".
In the fifth paragraph he wrote, "Technology, properly interiorized, does not degrade human life but on the contrary enhances it", what means that if it is well-linked to our skills, it will become the most important aid to develop them or improve them. This is also reaffirmed in the paragraph number 10, "True writing systems can and usually do develop gradually from a cruder use of mere memory aids. So, it shows that this writer does not agree with this second point.

The problem of illiteracy in latinoamerican people

In Colombia, there are a lot of illiteracy people, specially in low classes who have been affected, being discriminated by some literacy people.Taking into account Eunisa's example in the text. Can you tell a similar anecdote that have you watched or listened related to the topic of illiteracy in the adult people?
In the adult literacy education program there were students who didn't stop viewing themselves as social inferiors. What cultural artifacts could help them reach their goal of literal equality?

PERSONAL WRITING PROJECT

TOPIC:
Teacher education
Teacher’s beliefs about bilingualism in the Colombian context: Challenges and realities
AUDIENCE:
Teachers, students and community involved in the second language acquisition in our country
WHY AM I INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC?
First of all, I’m an English teacher, and I’m also and English student, I’ve been in some conferences and a lot of meetings at work, when this topic has been developed, and all I’ve heard at the end of each one is the discussing of the problems we have here in Colombia in our public schools, the teachers are tired of working under conditions unhelpful to acquire a second language, and the worst thing; our kids are not acquiring a second language the government is suppose to help them to do, instead they are just learning some words out of contest and actually that’s too much for millions of children who are saying the alphabet when they rather be playing , eating or sharing some family moments they don’t usually have.
In the other hand, I’ll talk about the context in which I’ve been through during the last three years, teaching children who have the opportunity to study in a bilingual school, learning from native teachers, learning in a real context, learning with all the necessary tools.
I’d like to talk about my personal experience and show how it could be possible to reach the government goal in this other hand way.

Writing is the means though when speech can be transmitted and preserved.

For many years the real and truth Word can be preserved, but the languages change, people speech change and cultural aspects could also change the context of the Words we want to transmit and preserve.
Writing has been a very important and useful tool for man, when writing for example things as simple as a description; we are not only saying some facts but we are drawing a complete scene in which we can make the readers see everything we want them to see in the way we want them to look at it.
Writing is communicating.
We can tell someone near what our ideas are, but when we write we can say our ideas in such a way that everybody even people far away from us can be informed in any place at any time.
The bible is one example of the successful of writing, the way each word has been preserved taking into account the development of the languages and the translation from one language to another ; the main purpose of the context has been preserved and transmitted till today’s day.

PERDONAL WRITING PROJECT

BILINGUALISM IN CALI.

Becoming a bilingual nation is one of the goals the Colombian goverment has since 2.004 in the education field. in order to reach it, the program needs to be part of the projects in each city, specially in the biggest ones. Cali is one of those cities pretending to become bilingual and as it is known the best strategy to do it is through schools, that is why some institutions are taking into account and foccusing on English learning processes. Very important goal, and much more when there is a term to get it; 2.019. But is it that easy?, what are the actions the goverment in going through?, are those actions working?, who is involved in this process?, what do teachers and parents think and suggest to the program?. Even though this is an amazing goal, it is a big challenge in which many aspects must be considered and I really want to get into all the possiblities and the limitations it has.

EXQUISITE CORPSE

Farenheit 451 is a social protest, since burning books is the strategy those firemen use to control people' minds, because reading is how human beings develop arguments and start being and thinking different, when they are wanted to be normal people undercontrol and easy to manage without any question mark. This film has a cronollogical structure; showing actions and then its consequences in a formal order driving its audience to an easy conmprehension of the facts. It is built by five characters or at least they are the ones who interact the most, they connect their own and almost simple stories to leave a big message. linked to the technology that is just highly advanced, starting with the electric-eyed snake, the mechanical hound, the flamethrowr and the special t.v screen able to interact with people talking, taking into account their own names. all this to consider some relevant topics such as: the relationship between authorities and people; how the first one goes ahead being dominant and subjugating the second, Concept of knowledge; suggesting that life is completely dependent on it, Ignorance, life and death etc. although this movie looks simple at the beggining, after going through it i possible to understand bradbury's criticism style.

Style rules - Style guide

In my studies at Univalle, I've noticed that little attention is given to Style when writing whether in English or French. I'm attaching a link to a style guide, take it into account when writing your academic texts. This is very important when you have to present papers at foreign universities and for national and international publications. It'd be nice if you begin to use style rules from this very English course.

FARENHEIT 451 - EXQUISITE CORPSE

THIS STORY SHOW US A FUTURISTE VIEW OF 60'S SCI-FI MOVIES. ALTHOUGH ITS SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE A LITTLE BIT FAKE, SOMETIMES IT HAS SOME REAL PREDICTIONS.

IT TALKS ABOUT A WEAK SOCIETY WHO LET THE GOVERNMENT RULE ALL OF ITS MOVEMENTS AND DECISSIONS. THIS GOVERNMENT DON'T LET PEOPLE READ BECAUSE THEY THINK READING MAKE PEOPLE SUFFER AND HAVE BAD FEELINGS (ACCORDING TO THE GOVERNMENT) SUCH AS SADNESS AND HATE. THE FIREMEN DEPARTMENT IS IN CHARGE OF BURN ALL OF THE BOOKS THEY FIND. THEY ARE CAREFULLY TRAINED TO LOOK FOR BOOKS WHEREVER THEY ARE HIDDEN. IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW CREATIVE THE PEOPLE CAN BE, THEY ARE ABLE TO FIND THE BOOKS.

MR. MONTAG, THE MAIN CHARACTER, IS A FIREMAN, WHO HAS GOTTEN A BRIGHT CAREER IN HIS JOB. HE IS HAVING A PROMOTION WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IN HIS LIFE BUT ONE DAY HE MEETS A GIRL WHO MAKES HIM CHANGE HIS MIND. HE STARTS READING IN SECRET BUT HIS WIFE, A WEAK MIND WOMAN WHO IS UNABLE OF HAVE HER OWN THOUGHS (IT'S MY OPINION) ACCUSES HIM WITH THE FIREMEN AND HE IS GOING TO BE CAUGHT BUT HE RUNS AWAY.

THE MOVIE SHOWS HOW THE GOVERNMENT, IN A DESPERATE WAY TO SHOW PEOPLE ITS POWER, SAYS THAT MONTAG HAS BEEN CAUGHT ; MEANWHILE HE IS HIDDEN IN A FOREST WITH HIS NEW FRIEND FIGHTING FOR DON'T LET THE WRITTEN TREASURES GO WITH THE FIRE.....

I REALLY LIKE THE SENSE OF THIS MOVIE BECAUSE IT SHOWS THAT WE ARE THE OWNERS OF OUR THOUGHS AND WE HAVE TO FIGHT FOR THEM. I DIDN'T LIKE THE FAKE SCENE WHEN THE POLICEMEN ARE FLYING OVER THE LAKE LOOKING FOR MONTAG, IT MADE ME LAUGH!!!

FAHRENHEIT 451

Fareheit 451 is a movie that shows us an inexact future moment, when the people of this future society were prohibited to read because according to the government, read makes people unhappy and makes the humanity thinks about many sad and bad thinks they shouldn’t think bout, so no one should realize about many things that had happen all around the world, the government wants to be in charge of everything, taking into account every single person thoughts. Montag; a fire-fighter who used to look for and born books, because it was prohibit to read in that “future moment!” So that’s why Montag decides to change his life and start to think in his own way, following his own thoughts. So in the movie the people was suppose to be as the old Montag who agree with the government doing what he did with books or doing what Montag did at the end of the movie following his own truth, following the truth.

One of the most important themes in this movie, is the fact that shows us somehow the way the goverment and organism in charge of the society want to take advantage of their position and control not only our acts and ways we develop our lives but also the way we think and our thoughts.

The end of the movie shows a way the future men can scape from all this control in the society, but also the way the men can enjoy the freedom in their own minds, following their truth.

Fahrenheit: Exquisite corpse

Actors and Actresses
The main actors are:
• Montag: Oskar Werner
• Julie Christies: Linda (Montag´s wife):
• Clarisse (the women who introduces Montag to the books word)
• Cyril Cusack: the captain
• Anton Diffirng: Fabian
• Jeremy Spencer: a man with the apple

Characters:
They are a stereotype o f the two currents of the society at the period (traditionalism and social movements). On the one hand, Montage (at the beginning), his wife and the firemen represent the followers of traditionalism, and in the other hand, the readers, who are the opponents to the system (people who don’t accept the common). The main characters are: Montage, his wife, the firemen polices and a passive society.

Plot:
The movie represents a whole society which stays in a strange environment where books are forbidden and living unreal world created by the mass Medias and living inside of their TVs. It narrates the life of a fireman official named Montag, who has fallowed and defended the traditional rules of the society against the books (people´s negative conception and stereotype of what writing means -a craziness and madness). At the beginning hi´s a consecrated and awarded persecutor of the readings and readers, but at the end he knows a girl named Clarisse who introduces him in the world of the reading, asks him about reasons for why destroying books and by criticizing the behavior of the TVs viewers. At the end he starts to love books and keeps some of them in his own house. After that, he is denounced by his denounced own wife and discovered by his partners who try to making him changing his position and comportment. He refuses this and finishes being a convict by killing his superior. Finally, he ended as a closed friend of the ex-enemies saving books.

Relationship with the Book
The movie fallows the same structure that the books, but the ending was a little different. Though, they neglected a character who is quite important in the book, setting and place are quite alike our normal ones. So we can reflect on them easily.

Topics
An utopian world, where people are living an imaginary life.
Director´s Style: It is a narration of the human being. He uses the third person. It is science fiction and could be considered as a thought (stream consciousness).

Teachers´ Beliefs about bilingualism in the Colombian context: Challenges and realities

Teachers´ Beliefs about bilingualism in the Colombian context: Challenges and realities
I want to talk about this topic, because it is a factual and current fact that is ready to be approved in Colombia.I want to present which are the most important facts to considering when we like to present a project that can affect or not all the Colombian population.
Most of the countries’ policies have tried working around the globalization. This word has become “naturally” in the sense of being competitive and in relationship with the rest. But these policies of globalization don’t define or consider what the sub-developed countries have to do when they assume it. For example: how the poverty and the socio-economical state can disturb or affect these processes.
Before implanting a system or global methodology, it is needful to search and budget for some facts associated with this, like advantages, disadvantages, benefits, losses and near and distant consequences, etc. Due to it, a lot of sub developed countries have to assume the effects of the bad implantations.
In Colombia for example, we have to hear about laws that are trying to approve the becoming of this country as a bilingual, but it is needful, first at all, we have ask us, if it sound reasonable or not. For example: is Colombia prepared to face the socio-economic and cultural implications, impact or shock. It sound good, for the insertion of a foreign language like the English could represent the access or approach to the technology and communications (information, interaction, mass media, etc.), but it could represent the end of the Colombian culture.

WRITING IS THE MEANS THROUGH WHICH SPECIALLY SPEECH IS TRANSMITTED AND PRESERVED

WRITING IS THE MEANS THROUGH WHICH SPECIALLY SPEECH IS TRANSMITTED AND PRESERVED

Even though, there is a big difference between talking and writing, because in oral communications we use some words, phrases and moods, etc., that never are represented in our written context. On the one hand, our orality includes some special elements with a socio-communicative meanings (e.g. gestures, onomatopoeic sound, etc. who represent our disagreements, likes, etc.), which couldn’t be graphically represented, because they carry a subjective representation of our reality. On the other hand, due to the common changes, orality is not endurable because it is continuously suffering variation, due to social context, and for some languages tend to die. In this case, writing appears like a preserver of the culture, because we write in a formal way, it doesn’t matter if it is not a literal transcription of our orality. For example if in our talking we use phrases like wanna or gonna, it has been common that we change for -want to- or -going to- as a way to represent and preserve the formality, and for faciliting a normal comprehension for foreign people who don’t know about theses cultural aspects.

HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS
WHY AM I INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC?
AS A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER I HAVE NOTICED STUDENTS DON'T LIKE WRITING (EVEN US, WHO ARE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS!). SOMETIMES THEY FEEL THEY DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TOOLS TO DO IT WELL BUT IN OTHER CASES, STUDENTS SIMPLY ARE NOT INTERESTED IN WRITING NOR L1 OR L2.
NOWADAYS, TEENAGERS HAVE OTHER INTERESTS SUCH AS MODERN MUSIC AND DANCING OR GOING OUT WITH THEIR FRIENDS, CHATTING AND TEXTING, ETC. THAT'S WHY I HAVE BEEN DOING A RESEARCH IN ORDER TO FIND OUT HOW TO GET THESE INTERESTING TOPICS FOR TEENS AS A TOOL TO MAKE THEM WRITE IN A DYNAMIC WAY WITHOUT LET THEM FEEL THAT THEY ARE DOING A SCHOOL WORK BUT HAVING FUN!

Writing destroys memory and weakens thought

Before writing ever existed, knowledge was transmitted through oral discourse. Teachers gave classes, parents taught their children, and it was all done through spoken language. There was never a problem, people just focused on what they were hearing and tried to commit it to memory. The introduction of writing changed many things, methodology being one of them. From then on ideas were written down and conserved for future use. Knowledge had taken on a material form. This was seen in a negative way by some, arguing that our brains would become lazy and our memories destroyed. While there may be some truth in the aforementioned statement, our brains do not become the slugs that it implies. Furthermore, we can strenghten our knowledge base and have it in our hands and at our disposal at any given time. Reading a text a few times will help us understand and withhold its knowledge in a far more efficient manner than by simply listening to it once or twice. In conclusion, the drawbacks to writing are compensated and surpassed by its advantages.

Fahrenheit 451is a movie that show us a future society in which all reading matter is forbidden and the fire department's job is to police the citizens who try to keep books in hiding.
One of the main characters is Montag an obedient fireman whose job it is to burn books which are illegal possessions and Clarisse a young school teacher whom Montag meets and plants the first seed of doubt in his mind.
I think the movie has a very well narrative structure because from the very beginning it is showing what it wants to transmit, that is to say that the director showed every scene in an organize way focusing the audience in the central topic.
Fahrenheit 451 takes place in an unspecified future time.
I think that the message that the director tries to show us with his futuristic work of fiction is how important books are to humans and how a world without them would be, filled with fear and worry.

MWP- being a second language thinker

As a second language student one the ever main goals since I started was to become a real second language thinker; as I used to say by that time: "to think the way I do in L1"( mother tongue). To reach a level like that assures any learner to succeed in any language skill, because doing that he/ she had created a strong basement which will permit them to use L2 (second language)naturally. But how to create such a level? It seems an easy to answer question, since any unaware learner might think that any learning activity involves a second language thinking process, which is partly true due to the fact that any student is using second language thoughts when they are dealing with an exercise , specially those that requires a second language expression; however many times the answer or second language expression starts being constructed in mother tongue, which retards the process of being a natural second language user. Therefore a more accurate answer requires a more complex process that includes long hours of practicing, furthermore "using"the language in a natural context which forces learners to produce instant responses to add fluency to the conversation they are having, in order to sound likewise natural.

Fahrenheit 451 is a movie that tells us a story about the extinction of the reading practice because of the technology. It shows us how passionate to reading a person can become. Montag and Clarisse, the main characters, hold a love to reading based relationship which leads him to get away from the system he was immersed.
Although the movie was filmed long time ago, it shows a futuristic setting anywhere on earth. The technical aspects of the film are quite influenced by the time it was shot.

losing our memories because of writing

if an usual writer loses their memory or not is relative. Particularly I agree with the idea of remembering or forgetting what we decide. To recall or forget something is a personal choice. I think many other factors influence to remember or neglect something, for instance stress, a low intake of iron in our meals or a deep concentration journey.
I disagree with people who believe writing will affect our memorizing capacity. To fill our minds with unuseful facts affects thinking process, writing is an excelent exercise to enhance mankind's mind.

what an academic text is....

An academic text is a well structured piece of writing which has a learning purpose. Its style is featured by a clear organization of the ideas that permits the reader reach their goal easily. Its language must be concrete and precise and its coherence must appear along the whole body of the text. Academic texts authors must expose their ideas using the impersonal voice and stating such secure knowledge that readers fulfill their goal by the reading of the text.

- Montag is the main character of the movie fahrenheit 451 he works at the firestation.
- The story takes plce in a world were books were forbidden and reading was punished
- There isn't any narrator out of the story that is presented by the main characters.
- The story takes place in somewhere of England, a city with houses with the same aspect
- The characters are interesting, the main character Montag had many problems at home and perhaps the only way out was reading.
- Technically speaking, this movie was clearly out of the mind of a visionaire, we can see it in the outfits, they were in one word futuristic
- Topics: submition-Prohibition-freedom
- I think that the effects in this movie are so poors and his director sucks.

What is an academic text?

An academic text is a kind of text, which try a particular topic through a comprehensible point of view (thesis)

Academic Text:

Are relatively formal in structure and style, the person who write an academic text always try to show us specific information developing a concept or idea.
This is the reason which a text academic is a great tool like students in our writing`s process; because this kind of text has the potential of being used for educational purposes; for example: someone who wants to be a writer.

WRITING MUST BE UNDERSTOOD AS TECHNOLOGY AND THEREFORE, AS ARTIFICIAL

According with Walter J. Ong writing must be understood as technology and threfore, as artificial. What one need to think about this statement is, first of all the meaning of technology, defined as "the application of practical and mechanical sciences to industry or commerce" and then, take into account the procces of writing which is developed through the begging of the childhood mainly, and this process works by using mechanical practices of putting first letters together to form words, then putting words together to form sentences and finally putting sentences in a text.

Thanks to all this process one can be capable of writing more complex texts with strict structures but all this is at the very beggining a mechanical process, that's why the writer becomes a kind of robot who has the whole process of writing as a complete system of codes that form a text.

Academic Text

An academic text is a tool to develop a theory although through facts and arguments by using expository rules.
It could be presented under certain typical characteristics of most common types of academic texts like essays, specific academic books (mathematics or sciences ones) etc. This characteristics are: impersonal voice (but there are certain academic texts written in first person), authority quotes, explanation or/and analysis of a process and even this kind of text can have instructions.
Exquisite Corpse exercise:
Movie Fahrenheit 451
Actors and actresses: The actors and actresses, of the movie Fahrenheit 451, embody a kind of reality about the future and the literature´s destiny.
Plot: Before it was believed, in the future we are going to have less access to the information and it is sometimes true. In the movie, the firemen burn books instead of putting out fires, and all the people live according to the general system, they don´t even know who they are, what they want or where they come from, but they have a “normal” life.
Narrative structure: The story tells us three main facts: The behaviors of the authorities and society, the change of Montag´s mind and the battle of the thoughts.
Setting: The locations looked as if they were from an ancient time. There were many old houses.
Characters: The characters show us their own clear position and their role in the story.
• Technical aspects: Recreation of a high technological future in matter of education is presented.
Director´s style: The director tries to show us a future technology by telling us a futuristic story, in spite of the time that this movie was filmed.
Themes: Although this movie has a main theme that is the extinction of the books in the future, we can identify other themes, like for instance Montag’s struggle with himself and with the other ones, people´s contempt toward the literature and the indifference of the society toward the future.

• Paragraph :
Fahrenheit 451 is a futuristic movie that tells us the story about the extinction of the books and the literature. Montag, who is the main character, embodies a fireman; he decides to struggle against an indifferent society that doesn´t care about its own future since people live according to the general system, they don´t even know who they are, what they want or where they come from, but they have a “normal” life.
After realizing the importance of the books and the literature, Montag tries to save them, In spite of this situation that he should face to.
On the other hand, we can appreciate director´s style who tries to show us a future technology by telling us this story, despite the time this movie was filmed. In this one, their locations looked as if they were from an ancient time. The Recreation of a high technological future in matter of education is presented in Fahrenheit 451.

“Writing is the means through which speech can be transmitted and preserved.”

Although writing is an artificial creation, this one is vital in order to keep any useful oral speech to construct meanings for the human being.
For long time ago, writing has been considered one of the most important human skills because it has helped us to interiorize all kinds of information in order to improve our lifestyle. As Walter J. Ong says to us, in his book “Orality and Literacy”, “Like other artificial creations and indeed more than any other, it is utterly invaluable and indeed essential for the realization of fuller, interior, human potential.” Unlike other machines, writing makes us evolve, but with the difference that this one turns us into conscious people, since we can use this artificial tool to produce coherent and logical ideas in order to express ourselves and to get the cleanest knowledge. Being writing skill an instrument, it can used to make us expert writers through the practice, by developing our entire human potential.

Therefore, writing makes human beings more conscious and wiser about their own actions, their own processes. Furthermore, writing process helps us to transmit and preserve a natural tradition, that it is the oral speech.

What is an academic text?
Second version

An academic text can be defined as a writing production that contributes to any scientific or university community by responding searching questions to the members of these groups. Therefore, these kinds of text are addressed to a specialized audience, like scientists or any academic institution, like a university or a searching center.
Academic texts contain literary, historical and cultural references. They have the potential to be used for educational purposes. For instance, a monograph, a thesis, an essay, a searching study or a paper are good example of an academic text, since they are well – structured and they have a specific aim.
To conclude, we can say that an academic text seeks to develop ideas and concepts in order to pass on a particular and useful knowledge.

Writing destroys the ability to memorize and we weaken thought. Those who use tend to forget as they rely on an exterior mechanism in order to remember.
I agree with this statement because since writing was discovered or invented, oral tradition in most of civilization disappeared. It carried out that civilizations focus on what they write and transmit information generation by generation in a written way. Now we are still following this way to remember because our memory is not working as it should. Most of the times we have to write in our agenda to remember things we have to do next. Also I am not saying that it is not useful nowadays. We do it and for most of the people is an important tool to remember things.

Farenheit

I do not like how Montag looks because he does not seem to understand the dimension of the problems he had at home and at work. The story in Fahrenheit 451 is really interesting and is followed on a straight line that allowed the viewer to understand softly.

Fahrenheit 451 is the station where some firemen were ready for a phone call telling them where books were to find them and burn them. Montag obviously is the main character in this movie; a mature man, clever and handsome who life an unreal life due to the fact that the movie is a fiction film they tried to give they feeling of anxianes along the movie.

The main theme is the prohibition of reading.

The director has a bored way to tell the story.

FAHRENHEIT 451

Fahrenheit 451 is the story of a young fireman called Montag and his wife who lived in a world where books and reading were forbitten. The story is a crazy situation after another; It tries to make a story without realism. It is hard to understand the main idea at the beginning if you are not concentrated. The story takes place in a town, and we can see just few people on the streets. In general, the scenes takes place during the day. Talking about the characters, definitely Montag is the one who steals the show, since he is shown as a different person from what he really is. The setting was in a small town, surrounded by landscapes. The way how the government try to dissapear books show us a horrible present and future. The director tried to show the story in a crazy way where most of the characters showed strong feelings like fear and rage.

Alvaro José Paragraph

Writing process kill memorization

The main purpose of this paragraph is to show what I think about the topic writing vs. memorization, and defend my belief that writing destroy the ability of memorize and weakens thought and those who use it tend to forget as they rely on an external mechanism in order to remember. In order to do that, I will explain that a stimulated human brain can memorize more information, then I will show that the habit on writing can provoke dependency and therefore lack of ideas.
Human brain is a wonderful organ composed by millions of linked brain cells. Information from the outside arrives to our brain through our senses and only a small percentage of this data is saved in our brain. What is wonderful here is that any kind of stimulus can awake those slept memories. By stimulating our brain the same way a muscle with exercises we keep it younger and active. Those activities include puzzles, games and most recently the Sudoku. The mind exercises not only prevent mental disorders, but improve the ability of memorization. A recently research of Journal of the American Medical Association demonstrated that people stimulated with brain activities improved their ability to solve daily problems as well as their memory. Writing on the other hand is the simple process of putting signs or symbols on a paper. This is an activity that only requires the interpretation of the information. I am completely sure that those people who can remember a simple name or a short telephone number need to write it down on a paper and became dependent on writing. Those people who write their information on a piece of paper is not stimulating their brains to improve their imagination and with the time they are not going to lose not only their capacity of retain information but their thoughts.

What an academic text is

An Academic text is a writing that contains something that we can learn, it could have a complex vocabulary or not because there are academic texts for children, so these texts have a friendly terminology.
I think an academic text must include something in which we can believe or take as true, that's why it is important that it has quotes from people to support the argument.
The organisation of these kind of texts generally is the introduction of the topic (hypothesis, thesis, question, etc), the position taken by the writter, some arguments to defend that position and finally the conclusion. Although an academic text is also when the author wants to inform about something and does not necessarily takes a position.

About Fahrenheit 451

Actors were great. Each one did a good job during the whole movie. Fire fighters were commited to protect civilians by seerching and burning all sort of books. Books that menaced people happiness in a world controlled by mass medias to think would be a crime. The narrative structure captures the audience and makes it stand still waiting for what and how the plot it is going to be solved. The story happens in different places, the restaurant, the fire station, the Montag house and finally the place where Montag ran away. The character of this movie personifies an interesting story about the future of reading practice. Directors wanted to show us a good movie wing as much as they could but at that moment, the technology was not advanced as today's days. Anyway, they did their best.

*** stament: "writing destroyds the ability to memorise and weakens thought, those who use it tend to forget as they rely on an exterior mechanism in order to remember."

... those who use it tend to forget? yes.

I definitly agree with this stament, taking into account my experence as a foreign languages student in the university, where I have been underpresured because of the writing process.

Nowadays our society depends a lot on what is written, and it does not care about memorising important things. So people have agendas and advanced cellphones which ¡remember them! what they need to remember. society has a faster rythm of life, it is true. But it does not mean we have to be programed by technology and its different tools. Okay, it makes our life easier sometimes, though we also must to accept it is dangerous for our conciousness.

* Writing destroys the ability to memorize and weakens thought thouse who use it tend to forget as they rely on an exterior mechanism in order to remember.

- Writing improve memorization: in order to people write and put in order their ideas in some way those ideas organized stay in the people mind a lot of time, sometimes when people do not remember any topic, maybe read some part(a little one) about it, in that moment remember everyting because the topic organized develop in our minds; memorization is not only with lineal writing, sometimes it could be improved through concept maps, synoptic maps, thesis or abstracs, for example in my case, i have to do a "practical map" of the concepts or ideas, but i have to write them down and read them again to memorize them better, after that writing improve memory and learning procesus.
